In the small village of Cabracancha, nestled in the Andes Mountains of Peru, a woman reclined on a hillside as she listened to her son read a children\u2019s book. Friends and family gathered around, relaxing in the shade of their church building after an afternoon meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy sounded out words in his language, diligently working his way through the story of Noah and the ark. Some of the people, especially those in the older generation, have never been able to read Quechua. It\u2019s a treat to hear a young person read it to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The boy\u2019s mother, Viani Estrada, nodded along word by word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cIt used to be that parents would not allow their children to speak Quechua, and they\u2019d force them to speak Spanish even though none of them really spoke Spanish very well. Since the arrival of the Wanca New Testament, they\u2019ve valued Wanca much more and have begun reading it as a family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
