Sometimes the phrase speaks of approaching judgement on God\u2019s people, as when God \u201cstirs up from the ends of the earth\u201d an army from Babylon or \u201cfrom the north\u201d (Jeremiah 6:22; 50:41). Other times, it forecasts foreboding, all-inclusive judgement on sinful humanity (Jeremiah 25:30-32).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conversely, the prophets foresee a great salvific reversal! Gentile nations will one day \u201ccome from the ends of the earth and say, \u2018Our ancestors possessed nothing but false gods, worthless idols that did them no good\u2019\u2026Therefore I will teach them\u2014this time I will teach them my power and might. Then they will know that my name is the Lord\u201d (Jeremiah 16:19-21).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Metaphorically, \u201cends of the earth\u201d means \u201cas far as one can go.\u201d All the world. All humanity, and all compartments of humanity. Every race, nationality, ethnic and language group. All peoples everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs far as one can go\u201d\u2014that\u2019s something to think about! It is likely far, far away from our home zone or comfort zone, and Christianized contexts where the church is domestic and the gospel (often) domesticated by a one cultural group or setting. \u201cThe ends of the earth\u201d challenges us to consider: How far are we willing to go\u2014geographically, culturally, socially, in prayer, service, suffering, and sacrifice\u2014to ensure that all peoples everywhere have a witness to the gospel?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/lausanne.org\/about\/blog\/the-ends-of-the-earth\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Read more<\/a>.
