{"id":12095,"date":"2023-06-07T08:50:24","date_gmt":"2023-06-07T15:50:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/missionscatalyst.net\/?p=12095"},"modified":"2023-06-07T09:35:27","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T16:35:27","slug":"ghana-publisher-apologizes-for-textbook-critical-of-christian-missionaries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/missionscatalyst.net\/?p=12095","title":{"rendered":"Ghana: Publisher Apologizes for Textbook Critical of Christian Missionaries"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Source: The Christian Post, June 5, 2023<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ghana National Association of Authors and Publishers has offered an apology and admitted to errors amid criticism from parents, educators, and the country\u2019s deputy education minister for a textbook\u2019s negative depiction of the impact Christian missionaries have had on the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a statement, the association offered an \u201cunqualified apology\u201d to the Ministry of Education, The National Council for Curriculum and Assessment, Ghanaian Schools, Nananom, the Christian Council of Ghana, and \u201cany Ghanaian who find the statements obnoxious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book, titled <em>History of Ghana for Basic Schools, Learners Book 4,<\/em> reportedly touches on what it describes as the negative consequences of Christian missionary activities and claims Christianity has led to an increase in poverty in the country, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/were-sorry-for-obnoxious-statements-about-christianity-in-history-textbook-ghana-authors-publishers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ghana\u2019s largest English radio station<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of the 2021 census, Christianity is the predominant faith in Ghana, practiced by 71.3% of the population across numerous denominations, [and] Islam constitutes the religious beliefs of 19.9% of the nation\u2019s total populace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.christianpost.com\/news\/publishers-group-apologizes-for-textbook-criticizing-christianity.html\" target=\"_blank\">Read the full story<\/a>.
