More than 200 imams, Islamic scholars, and leaders across the United States and Canada are calling on Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban to end its ban on girls\u2019 and women\u2019s education in the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Months after banning education for girls in high school, in December, the group announced an indefinite ban on girls\u2019 and women\u2019s attendance at universities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The move has elicited outrage across the world, with Muslims, both scholars and laypersons, condemning the ban and calling on the Taliban to rescind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cEducation is both a right and a duty for all Muslims, women and men,\u201d said Imam Abdul Malik Mujahid, an imam in Chicago and former Chair of the Parliament of the World\u2019s Religions, the largest interfaith organization in the world. \u201cThe Taliban cannot claim to be following the teachings of Islam while violating a core tenet and requirement of the faith.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
